Activities in the Children's Department

It’s SUMMER READING TIME! Registration continues all this month for the “Mission READ: To the Library and Beyond” summer reading program! Children ages preschool through 6th grade are invited to enjoy fun activities and earn prizes for reaching weekly reading goals.

A number of special activities are scheduled for the first full week of summer reading:
June 5, 6 p.m. & June 7, 10 a.m. & 2 p.m.: Henry & Mudge Stories – bring your camera and get a picture taken with Mudge!
June 6, 4 p.m. & 6 p.m.: Story & Craft presented by the Ecology Action Center
June 8, 1 p.m. & 3 p.m.: Ronald McDonald Magic Show

Children must be registered for the summer reading program in order to be eligible to receive a ticket for these activities, and others offered throughout the summer. Tickets will be distributed on a first-come basis, and may be limited due to space. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all events.

Summer Story Hours: Summer Story Hours are geared to preschoolers and their families. Come to the NPL Community Room and enjoy stories, songs, and a craft activity! This is a FREE family activity, and no registration is required.

Summer Story Hours last for 6 weeks beginning June 12 and ending July 18 at these times:
Tuesday evenings, 6:30 p.m., and Wednesday mornings, 10 a.m. (no story hour on July 4)

Buy One, Get One FREE at Scholastic Book Fair: The annual “Buy One Get One Free” Scholastic Book Fair will be held in the NPL Children’s Department. Mission Read & Feed – Food Drive at NPL This Summer!

This summer, Normal Public Library will be collecting food for local food pantries. Please bring in a non-perishable food donation that is not past the expiration date to put in the Kroger grocery cart by the Discovery Room. We will chart our progress with a bulletin board display, with each full cart moving a rocket closer to the moon. To reach the moon, our goal is 1,500 items. Last summer, there were 3,301 participants in the summer reading program – just think, if every summer reading participant donated just one item, we could make it to the moon and back again! All patrons (not just summer readers) are encouraged to donate to this worthwhile MISSION! Thank you in advance!

Teen Readers, Join the “Pluto Memorial Book Club” This Summer

Teen readers who have completed grades 6* through 12 are invited to join the “Pluto Memorial Book Club” summer reading program at Normal Public Library! Participants can earn free paperback books by completing reading goals; those who complete the program will be entered in a drawing for a number of great prizes (check out the display case near the sing-up area!), including a computer! Sign up begins Thursday, May 31, at the circulation desk on the main floor. (* = kids who have completed 6th grade can choose either the teen program, or the children’s “Mission Read” summer program)

An additional incentive for Pluto participants will be a chance to win a FREE copy of the final Harry Potter book! Join the reading club and write a short book review between May 31 and July 20, and your name will go into a drawing. Four books are available, and the drawing will be July 21.

Movie Matinee for Adults at NPL

NPL’s Movie Matinee series continues this month at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 21. The featured film is about the life of a Norwegian immigrant family in 1910 San Francisco and centers around Mama and her detailed, pennywise household budget. Irene Dunne, Barbara Bel Geddes and Philip Dorn star. Bring a friend and enjoy the afternoon – free, and snacks provided!

NPL Reading Group Schedule

All old and new reading group members are invited to join in monthly book discussions at Normal Public Library. The group meets on the last Tuesday of the month, in the Small Group Study Room on the second floor. Upcoming dates and titles include:
