December 2007

Activities in the Children's Department

Holiday Treasures: Drop by the Children’s Department between 10am-1pm Saturday, December 8, for “Holiday Treasures!” Participants can create a Holiday Reindeer craft in the Discovery Room, and enjoy holiday stories at 10:30, 11:30 & 12:30 in the Story Hour Room. This FREE family activity is suitable for preschoolers through 6th graders and their family members. Hope to see you there!

Game Day! Ring out 2007 on New Year’s Eve, and enjoy “Game Day” at NPL! Preschoolers (age 3-5) through adults are invited to the Community Room Monday, December 31, between 10am-1pm to play a variety of games for all ages. We will provide games, or you can bring your own games to share! Bring the whole family, or just yourself (children must be accompanied by an adult). This FREE program is sponsored by the Children’s and Adult Departments – come and join the fun!

Book Showers for Literacy Collection: NPL’s Children’s Department is once again serving as a collection point for donations for the “Book Showers for Literacy” program, sponsored by CCRRN and STAR Adult Literacy. During the holiday season, new or gently used books for children of all ages are collected and distributed into the hands of children who might not otherwise have them in their homes. Donations will be accepted through December 14. Thank you in advance for your generosity in helping needy children enjoy the priceless gifts of books and reading!

For more information about these and other activities, call the Children’s Department,
454-4668.

Creating Cards for the Holidays

Normal Public Library will host “Creating Cards for the Holidays” at 2 p.m. Friday, December 7 in the Community Room. Gretta Barclay will guide each participant in creating greeting cards using recycled cards. All supplies will be provided for this FREE program. Come and enjoy the fun of making cards – and munching on snacks! Please register at the Circulation Desk or by calling 452-1757; walk-ins are also welcome.

New Circulation System Coming in December

During the week of December 1, 2007, Normal Public Library will be going to a new circulation system. We believe that we will be able to better serve our patrons with the new Sirsi/Dynix system. We appreciate your understanding and patience as the staff learns the new system!

Please note that from December 1-6, patrons must have their library cards with them in order to check out materials. During this transition period to the new system, we will be unable to access your library records using your name. If you plan to check out materials, be sure that you have your card with you!!

Mitten Tree Collection Through January 3

Normal Public Library will once again display the Mitten Tree, and invite our community to help decorate it with new or gently used mittens, scarves, gloves and hats for children and adults. NPL will donate these items to day cares, schools and shelters, to be given to those in need. The collection will take place through January 3. Several other libraries in the area are also serving as Mitten Tree locations. Thanks to radio station STAR 107.7 FM for co-sponsoring this event with local libraries!

Movie Matinee for Adults at NPL

NPL’s Movie Matinee series continues this month at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, December 20. The featured film is a popular Christmas musical comedy starring Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. Bring a friend and enjoy the afternoon – free, and snacks provided!

NPL Newsletter Going “Green”

The Town of Normal is encouraging all departments to make an effort to “go green” by recycling and eliminating as much use of paper as possible. With this in mind, Normal Public Library will no longer publish a paper newsletter, starting in January 2008. (A few paper copies will be available at the library)

The newsletter will be available online via the library’s website (click on the newsletter tab at www.normal-library.org). If you do not have access to a computer at home, visit your local public library!

If you choose, you may have the newsletter e-mailed to you: send your e-mail address to Mari McKeeth, Lud19@hotmail.com Please indicate “library newsletter” in the subject line, so that your message won’t be deleted as junk mail. Once you have done this, future newsletters will be e-mailed to the address you have sent.

Please note that if you are a paid member of the Friends of Normal Public Library, you will continue to receive notice of the Book Sales in the mail!

Donate Your Used Books

The Friends of NPL are happy to accept donations of used book throughout the year.
Bring them to the library marked ‘for the Friends book sale’. Please DO NOT leave your book donations at the off-site book drops!! All donations for the sale must be brought in to the library. Thanks!
