Activities in the Children's Department

PASTA DOODLE! Drop in the Discovery Room anytime between 10am-1pm Monday, October 13, to create your own picture using colorful pasta! This is a FREE family activity geared toward preschoolers through 6th graders accompanied by an adult; no registration is required.

STORY HOUR REGISTRATIONS – Registration for Two-Year-Old Story Hours begins Tuesday, October 21 for Normal residents. Parents outside of Normal may sign up beginning Friday, October 24. The free five-week program for two-year-olds accompanied by an adult includes stories, songs and large motor activities. Classes are offered Tuesdays at 5:45 & 6:30 p.m. and Wednesdays at 9:30, 10:15 and 11 a.m. Registration is required, call 454-4668.

Registration for Lapsit Story Hours begins Monday, October 20 for Normal residents. Parents outside of Normal may sign up beginning Friday, October 24. This five week interactive program for children ages 0-23 months and adults includes songs, fingerplays and baby games. Classes are offered Mondays at 5:30 & 6:30 p.m. and Tuesdays at 9:30 & 10:30 a.m. Registration is required, call 454-4668.

TUESDAY TALES -- Come and enjoy songs and stories every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. (through December 16) in the Book Nook! The stories are geared to ages 3-5, but everyone is welcome. No registration is required for this FREE family program.

FAMILY STORY HOUR – Family Story Hour will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday & Saturday, October 24 & 25, in the Community Room. The theme this month is “Marvelous Monsters.” Preschoolers and their families are invited to enjoy stories, songs and activities. There is no registration required for this FREE 30-minute family program, so join us!

HALLOWEEN STORY HOURS – Wear your costume and bring your cameras to our Family Halloween Story Hours, featuring seasonal songs, stories and a parade. The three sessions will be held in the Community Room at 6 p.m. Tuesday, October 28, and at
10 a.m. Wednesday & Thursday, October 29 & 30.
No registration is required for these FREE programs!

LET’S GO BATTY! – Drop in the Discovery Room between 11am-2pm Wednesday, October 29 and “Let’s Go Batty!” You can make a Bat Treat Holder and also listen to batty stories in the Story Hour Room at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The stories are about sweet, fun, lovable bats and do NOT have any connection to Halloween or anything scary. This FREE family program is geared toward children from preschool through 6th grade accompanied by an adult, and no registration is required.

Library Patrons Can Park in Deck for FREE!

The public parking deck just east of the Bank of Illinois has opened, which will provide 600+ additional parking spaces for library patrons. Library patrons can park in the deck for free. Vouchers to use in the deck’s payment machines will be given to library patrons who request them; you will need to request a voucher each time you visit the library and park in the deck for longer than the first free hour.


Computer Classes for Adults

By popular demand, NPL will once again offer FREE computer classes for adults. The classes will meet from 5:30 – 7 p.m. on the dates listed below. Preregistration is required, along with a $10 deposit per class; the deposit will be returned when you arrive for class, or if you cancel more than 24 hours prior to the class. Participants should bring their own Flash Drive if they want to take classroom exercises home with them. Sarah Carter will be the class instructor.

Wednesday, November 5: Microsoft Word I (create a document, explore toolbars, spell check & print)
Wednesday, November 12: Microsoft Word II (edit a document, modify page layout, format text)
Thursday, November 6: EXCEL I (edit spreadsheet, explore toolbar & windows, using ‘help’)
Thursday, November 13: EXCEL II (create spreadsheet, basic calculation, cell referencing)
Tuesday, November 11: Basic E-Mail & Internet (browse World Wide Web, send and receive e-mail, filter SPAM and junk mail)

In-person registration and deposits will be taken at the Circulation Desk. Please note that the Adult Computer Center will be CLOSED to the public during these class times.


“Tales of Hamilton” at NPL

NPL will present “Tales of Hamilton” at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 25 in the Community Room. Members of the Twin City Tale Spinners will bring Alexander Hamilton alive by portraying him at various stages of his fascinating life, from his poor difficult childhood to becoming a respected and visionary statesman. Featured tellers are Arthur Avery, John Kirk, Vivian Carter and John Walsh. The program is FREE and open to the public.

“Tales of Hamilton” is presented in conjunction with the “Alexander Hamilton: The Man Who Made Modern America” display at Milner Library, Illinois State University. The traveling exhibit will be at Milner from October 16 – December 5, 2008, and is free and open to the public. Thanks for Your Survey Input!

Thank you to everyone who helped provide information for the NPL Master Plan by filling out a survey last month. We received more than 1,100 survey responses, and will use this valuable information to improve the library and its services. Again, our thanks!


Young at Heartland Coming to NPL

The Normal Public Library welcomes Young at Heartland at 2 p.m. Friday, October 3 in the Community Room. The Acting Workshop for Seniors, featuring local thespians, will be giving a free performance! No registration is required, and refreshments will be served.


Teen Activities at NPL

The Anime/Manga Club will meet October 7 & 21 at 4:30 p.m. in the Community Room to watch episodes of anime films and then discuss manga we have read. The October 21 event is a special extended movie night from 4:30 – 8pm, featuring pizza and a full-length anime film. All teens are welcome to this FREE program, and snacks will be served. NPL’s Teen Advisory Council will meet October 9 & 23 at 4p.m. in the Community Room. On the 9th teens will create pass-around stories, a form of group storytelling. The October 23 gathering will feature a Halloween Party – costumes are encouraged! All teens in grades 7-12 are welcome, and snacks will be served. Call Kristi at 452-1757 for more information.


Movie Matinee for Adults at NPL

NPL’s Movie Matinee series continues this month at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, October 16. This month’s offering is “Stage Door,” starring Katharine Hepburn, Ginger Rogers and Lucille Ball. Bring a friend and enjoy the afternoon – free, and snacks provided!


Donate Your Used Books

The Friends of NPL are happy to accept donations of used book throughout the year.
Bring them to the library marked ‘for the Friends book sale’. Please DO NOT leave your book donations at the off-site book drops!! All donations for the sale must be brought in to the library. Thanks!
