Activities in the Children's Department

Story Hour Sign-Up: Registration for Lapsit and Two-Year-Old Story Hour begins Tuesday, Oct. 23, for Normal residents, and Friday, Oct. 26, for residents outside of Normal. The five-week sessions begin the week of November 5. Lapsit times are Mondays at 5:30 & 6:30 p.m.; Two-Year-Old Story Hours are offered Tuesdays at 5:45 & 6:30 p.m. and Wednesdays at 9:30, 10:15 and 11 a.m. To register, or for more information, call 454-4668.

Family Story Hour: Bring your family and friends, and come join the fun at NPL’s Family Story Hours! Family Story Hours take place in the Community Room at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19 and Saturday, Oct. 20. No registration is required to attend.

Halloween Story Hours: Wear your costume and bring your camera to the Family Halloween Story Hours, featuring stories, songs and a parade. Three sessions are offered: Tuesday, Oct. 23, 6 p.m.; Wednesday & Thursday, Oct. 24 & 25, 10 a.m. Activities are designed for preschoolers accompanied by an adult. No registration is required for this FREE program, to be held in the Community Room.

Craft Day: Drop in the Discovery Room Friday, Oct. 26 between 10am-1pm to make a “Halloween Boo-Quet” or a “Fall Fling Basket.” The FREE program is for preschoolers through 6th graders accompanied by an adult, and no registration is required.

Sing-Along Movie Day! Celebrate a day off from school by enjoying a “Sing-Along Movie Day” at NPL! Bring the family to watch a movie and sing along (whether you know the words or not) on Monday, October 8. The Little Mermaid (G) will show at 10 a.m., and High School Musical (PG) shows at 2:30 p.m., both in the Community Room. Popcorn will be provided and drinks with lids will be allowed for this FREE event. No registration is required; children age 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Tales @ 2 Returns “Tales @ 2” features stories for preschoolers and their families, and will be offered Fridays at 2 p.m. in the Children’s Department Book Nook, from October 5 through December 14. **There will be NO session during Thanksgiving week, November 23. No registration is required for this FREE family activity.

Long-Term Care Insurance Program

“Long-Term Care – More Than Just Insurance” will be presented Saturday, October 6, at 10 a.m. in the NPL Community Room. Certified Financial Planner Carol Burroughs and MAGA Ltd. Vice-President Brian Gordon will present unbiased information about the basics of long-term care. No specific products or companies will be endorsed. With life expectancies increasing and government sponsored safety nets eroding, the time is NOW to start planning for long-term care – join us for this FREE program in recognition of Financial Planning Week, October 1-7, 2007.


Lecture by Local Author Earl Reitan

Earl A. Reitan, Professor Emeritus of History at ISU, will present a free public lecture on his new book at 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 10, in the Community Room. Politics, Finance, and the People is a study of British public finance and administration from 1770-1792, a time of political, military and imperials crisis. Questions and discussion will follow.


Computer Classes for Adults Offered in November

Computer classes for adults will be offered from 5:30 – 7 p.m. on the dates listed below. There is no fee, but in-person registration and a $10 per class deposit are required; the deposit will be returned when you arrive for the class or if you cancel more than 24 hours in advance. The second date’s content is a repeat of the first. Classes offered include:

Microsoft Word Reports & Resumes: Tuesday, Nov. 6 & Wednesday, Nov. 14
Excel: Creating a Budget Spreadsheet: Wednesday, Nov. 7 & Tuesday, Nov. 13
PowerPoint: Thursday, Nov. 8 and Nov. 15

Sign up in person at the Circulation Desk on the first floor.


Movie Matinee for Adults at NPL

NPL’s Movie Matinee series continues this month at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, October 18. The featured film is a 1935 Hitchcock thriller about a man wrongly identified as a spy, starring Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll. Bring a friend and enjoy the afternoon – free, and snacks provided!


NPL Reading Group Schedule

All old and new reading group members are invited to join in monthly book discussions at Normal Public Library. The group meets on the last Tuesday of the month, in the Small Group Study Room on the second floor. Upcoming dates and titles include:
October 30, 9:30 a.m.: An Innocent Man by John Grisham

Teen Advisory Council Activities

NPL’s Teen Advisory Council will meet October 11 & 25 at 4 p.m. All teens in grades 7-12 are welcome, and snacks will be served. For more information, contact Linda Hutchins at 452-1757.

The Friends of NPL are happy to accept donations of used book throughout the year.
