Activities in the Children's Department
SUMMER READING REGISTRATION! Get
in the Game, READ! at the Normal Public Library this
summer! Enjoy fun activities, earn prizes for reaching reading
goals, and much more. Registration for summer
reading begins Wednesday, May 28. There are
reading categories for all ages, including:
· Preschoolers listen to books to earn prizes
· Kindergartners through 6th graders read to earn
prizes – those who complete the program will get to
choose a free book to keep from the Book Bonanza
· Teens read to earn free books and prizes in the
Teen Triathlon
· Adults read 25 children’s books to earn prizes
in ARKS (Adults Reading Kids Stuff)
INTERESTED? Register in person in the Children’s Department
for Get in the Game, READ! (Preschool – grade
6) and ARKS. Teens should sign up in person at
the Circulation Desk on the main floor. 6th graders may
choose EITHER Get in the Game, Read! OR Teen
Triathlon. If you have questions, call 454-4668 (children/ARKS)
or Linda at 452-1757 (teens).
Scholastic Book Fair Kicks Off Summer Reading
Help support the Summer Reading Program and
get a start on your own summer books – shop at our
Scholastic Book Fair in the Children’s Department!
All proceeds will be used to purchase books to be given
away to children who complete their 2008 Summer Reading
Goals. For every item purchased, you can choose a second
item of equal or lesser value for FREE! Book Fair hours
are as follows:
Wednesday, May 28 & Thursday, May 29: 9am-8pm
Friday, May 30 & Saturday, May 31: 9am-4pm
Sunday, June 1: 1-4pm
Monday, June 2 through Thursday, June 5: 9am-8pm
Friday, June 6: 9am-3pm

Reception to Welcome New Library
Administrator
The Normal Public Library staff and board
will host a public reception to welcome new Library Administrator
Brian Chase from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, May 17,
in the Community Room. The public is invited and encouraged
to drop in to meet and chat with Brian; light refreshments
will be served.
The Art of Bonsai
Nell Dellinger of Landscape Resources &
Bonsai will present an introduction to the art of bonsai,
history and horticulture, at 2 p.m. Saturday,
May 24 in the Community Room. No registration
is required for this FREE program! For more information,

Gardening with Herbs
Master Gardener Judy Hines will talk about
herbs and their many uses at 6:30 p.m. Thursday,
May 29 in the Community Room. Reservations
are requested for this FREE program – you may register
in person at the library checkout desk, or by calling 452-1757.
New Drop Box Location Now Available
The newest library drop box is located just
south of the Schnucks entrance at Constitution Center in
north Normal. Other locations include the Normal Senior
Center, Jewel on West Hovey, and the Shoppes at College
Hills near Target & Ann Taylor Loft. Each location also
has a separate drop box for CDs and DVDs. We hope that these
offsite bookdrops will be convenient options when your time
is short or parking is unavailable.

Teen Triathlon Summer Reading
Program
All teens are invited to register for NPL’s
summer reading program, Teen Triathlon, starting
May 28 at the main floor Circulation
Desk. Read at your own pace to earn free books and prizes.
If you turn in a short book review between May 28-July 9,
you’ll be entered into a July 10 drawing for a free
Boom Box Stereo. It’s easy, and it’s fun! Questions?

Teen Advisory Council Activities
NPL’s Teen Advisory Council will meet May
8 & 22 at 4 p.m. in the Community Room.
On the 8th teens will discuss the book Un Lun Dun by China
Mieville. The May 22 gathering will be a Game Day. All teens
in grades 7-12 are welcome, and snacks will be served. For

Movie Matinee for Adults at NPL
NPL’s Movie Matinee series continues
this month at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 15.
This month’s offering is a comedy starring Lucille
Ball and Desi Arnaz. The couple honeymoons in a travel trailer
across the country, experiencing the funny events and hi-jinks
that you expect from Lucy and Desi. Bring a friend and enjoy
the afternoon – free, and snacks provided!
Donate Your Used Books
The Friends of NPL are happy to accept donations
of used book throughout the year.
Bring them to the library marked ‘for the Friends
book sale’. Please DO NOT leave your book
donations at the off-site book drops!! All
donations for the sale must be brought in to the library.
