Activities in the Children’s Department

Story Hour Registration: Fall Story Hour Registration begins Tuesday, September 8. The free five-week program includes 40 minute sessions of storytelling, fingerplays, songs, crafts and games. Classes are offered Tuesdays at 5:30 & 6:30pm, and Wednesdays and Thursdays at 9:30 and 11am. Sessions begin September 22. Registration is required, call 454-4668.

Partners in Reading: The popular program offers children in grades 1-6 the opportunity to have a college student as a ‘reading buddy.’ The FREE after-school program, offered Mondays-Thursdays, is designed to encourage children to enjoy reading through activities with their college partner. Parents may choose a time that is convenient fro their family. Children and college partners must register in person in the Children’s Department through September 16. PIR will begin the week of September 21.

Family Story Hour: Family Story Hours for preschoolers and their families will be offered at 10am Friday, September 18 & Saturday, September 19, in the Community Room. No registration is required for the free 30-minute programs.

Tuesday Tales: Come and enjoy songs and stories, favorites old and new, in the Book Nook area.. Children ages 3-5 and their families are invited. This free family activity will be offered at 10:30am Tuesdays from September 15 through December 8. No registration is required.

Teacher Packs: The NPL Children's Department can help teachers augment their classroom and school library materials. Teachers at Normal and Bloomington schools of preschool and elementary students or special education students through 12th grade can request materials throughout the school year. Teacher packs are checked out for 6 weeks; teachers may select the items themselves, or ask that NPL children's staff to choose them with at least a week's advance notice. Delivery to Unit 5 schools is available. Call 454-4668 for more information, or come to the library to pick up an information sheet.

DVD & VHS Checkout Extended!

The checkout period for DVDs and VHS tapes has been extended to one week, effective immediately. DVDs and VHS tapes can be checked out on adult library cards, with a maximum of 6 per card. The prices remain the same, $1 per DVD and 50 cents per VHS tape.


Free Parking Available in Deck for Library Patrons

Don’t forget… Library patrons can always park in the College Avenue Parking Deck for free. Vouchers to use in the deck’s payment machines will be given to library patrons who request them; you will need to request a voucher each time you visit the library and park in the deck for longer than the first free hour.

Teen Activities at NPL

The Anime/Manga Club will meet at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 1 & 15 to watch episodes of anime and discuss manga we have read. All junior & senior high students are welcome, and snacks are provided.

NPL’s Teen Advisory Council will meet at 4 p.m. Thursday, September 10 & 24. On the 10th, we will plan a 'recommended reading' display for the teen area. The program on the 24th is a book discussion of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. All teens in grades 7-12 are welcome, and snacks will be served.

Teen Writer’s Workshop: All teen writers and artists are invited to share your work, toss around ideas for a library teen ‘zine, and practice writing exercises and games. Join us at
3 p.m. Monday, September 14.


Game Day for teens will be held at 4-6pm Wednesday, September 9 in the Community Room. Games will include Dance Dance Revolution, Rock Band, Apple to Apples and other board games.

Adult Programs at NPL

NPL’s Movie Matinee for Adults series continues this month at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, September 17. This month’s offering is Please Don't Eat the Daisies, starring Doris Day and David Niven. Bring a friend and enjoy the afternoon – free, and snacks provided!

Putting Your Garden to Bed for the Winter: Master Gardener Anne Nadakavakaren will provide helpful hints on how to prepare your garden for winter. She will also show how to make cuttings from summer plants. All participants may paint a pot and plant a cutting to take home. Registration is required -- please call 452-1757 to register for this free program. Don't delay, this program is limited to 25 participants.

Asian Travelogue: Enjoy a journey to the Far East, Mongolia, China, Japan and Singapore, with Elaine Young and Judy Bauer. This FREE program is at 2pm Thursday, September 10, in the Community Room.

Games Aren’t Just for Kids!

Adults of all ages are invited to join us for games and refreshments in the Community Room at
1 p.m. Friday, September 4. If you have a favorite game to share, please bring it along. Games will also be provided, including board and card games, Rock Band, and the ever-exciting Wii! Call Mary Lou, 452-1757, if you have questions.


Volunteer Opportunity: Help Us Recycle!

The Friends of NPL are happy to accept donations of used book throughout the year.
Bring them to the library marked ‘for the Friends book sale’. Please DO NOT leave your book donations at the off-site book drops!! All donations for the sale must be brought in to the library. Thanks!
