 In 2003, the United
States was home to about 40 million Hispanics or 13.4% of
the population. The Hispanic population is the largest minority
group in the U.S. growing at about 4% per year. From 1990
to 2003, the Spanish population increased in Illinois by 8.6%.
The Spanish language (Castellano or Espanol) is the third
or fourth most spoken language on the planet. In 1999, about
352 million people spoke Spanish within the seven continents.
 The Normal
Public Library is reaching out to the Spanish-speaking community
by building a collection of Spanish books ranging from children’s
to adult. Brochures about our Spanish collection are now available
at the library. In addition, the library’s homepage
includes links such as Hispanic Online Magazines; Internet
Resources for Latin America; Latin American Network Information
Center (Lanic); Latino Issues Forum (LIF); Latino Medicine;
Library of Congress Hispanic Reading Room; and National Council
of La Raza (NCLR). Look for these sites under “Info
Links” on the Normal Public Library’s homepage
at http://www.normal-library.org.
In April 2005, we added “the Rosetta Stone,” a
language tutorial which includes a search for students learning
English as a second language.
English as a Second
Language is a grant-funded program that is held at the Normal
Public Library and other Bloomington/Normal locations. Free
classes are held at the library Monday – Thursday from
9:00 -11:30 a.m., and Monday and Wednesday 12:30-3:00 p.m.
The afternoon classes have transportation available. For more
